About Me
As I am continuing my English studies in graduate school at the University of Tennessee, I work as a Graduate Research Assistant. As a Research Assistant, I work closely with faculty to craft a research plan, identify relevant research, analyze documents, organize the research, and collaborate with professors on my findings.
In addition to working as a Research Assistant, I also served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA). In this position, I taught a section of Rhetoric and Composition I and several one-credit-hour tutorials for this course. In teaching these tutorials, I worked closely with faculty lecturers to prepare and deliver course instruction in FYC classrooms. While completing my B.A., I also served as an English Teaching Assistant (ETA), published several pieces, gave presentations, and received various awards.
Within this ePortfolio, you can find my published work, both non-fiction and fiction, along with links to many of my other creative endeavors.
Literary Interests
My literary interests include but are not limited to young adult literature, historical fiction, American literature, and feminist literature.
I especially enjoy gender studies, more specifically how women and young girls are portrayed in literature, especially in young adult literature, and looking at class struggles (Marxism) as they are represented in the literature of different time periods. I have a particular interest in gender performance studies, particularly when applied to young adult literature and media.
For instance, while completing my master's degree, I read Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games through a Marxist, feminist, and Foucouldian lens. This style of reading allowed me to put myself and Collins in a conversation with theorists like Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Laura Mulvey, Karl Marx, and others. I hope to continue to explore more works of young adult literature in a similar way as my career progresses.
